Eating Disorder Care for T1DM:
A Field Guide for Health Care Providers
Thank you for your interest in downloading this resource to learn how you can help someone living with Type 1 Diabetes and an eating disorder.

Individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM) have grown up having to watch what they eat. This has been on of the main treatment interventions in order to control their blood sugars. Now, what happens if they develop an eating disorder because of this rigidity and order? This happens ~25% of the time! How can we focus on eating disorder recovery and diabetes management at the same time?
Treating an eating disorder which coexists with T1DM can be a challenge. This is why we’ve created Eating Disorder Care for T1DM: A Field Guide for Primary Care Providers.
Learn how to help patients living with T1DM and an eating disorder.
Living with both T1DM and an eating disorder, otherwise known as "diabulimia" or ED-T1DM, is dangerous. It can increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis and long term health complications. This is why it's so important to ensure patients get the help they need right away so they can work towards recovery.
That’s why we created this guide.
In this 12+ page guide, learn:
- how to detect an eating disorder in your patients living with T1DM
- screening tools
- assessment techniques
- treatment interventions
- and more!

All members of the multidisciplinary team can benefit from this guide - this includes Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs), physicians, nurses, dietitians, and more.
We need more health care providers who are able to provide appropriate care to those living with ED-T1DM from both a diabetes and an eating disorder lens.
