What is Family-Based Treatment (FBT)?
FBT is a evidence-based, therapeutic approach designed to treat eating disorders in children and youth.
Rather than relying solely on individual therapy, FBT includes the family as the primary source of support and intervention in the eating disorder recovery process. FBT views the eating disorder as a concern impacting the entire family unit, and involves different stages of collaboration between the therapist, the family, and the individual living with the eating disorder.

Key Principles of family-Based Treatment
There are three key principles of FBT:

Externalizing the eating disorder
Externalizing the eating disorder

Empowering parents and caregivers

Restoring weight and regular eating
Using these three principles, the family works together to beat the eating disorder.
Studies have shown that FBT is an effective treatment option for youth with eating disorders, leading to higher rates of weight restoration, remission of eating disorder symptoms, and overall recovery compared to individual therapy alone.
Together, we can use FBT to help beat the eating disorder.
